Shoalhaven Bushwalkers Fund raiser in support of an aid post in Western Highlands Province
When: Friday 6 December 2019, 4pm-7pm
Where: Lynburn, Bomaderry, NSW.
Spend a delightful evening at Lynburn, a beautiful 1890’s house in Bomaderry, near Nowra on the NSW South Coast with drinks, delicious snacks, live music and great company…all for a $20 donation to raise money to help support an aid post in the Western Highlands of PNG.
The aid post is located in Umi and will serve a population of about 4,500 people across surrounding communities. Currently, the only access to health care is in Mt Hagen and for many this involves too long a journey on foot and by PMV. The consequences are particularly devastating for expectant mothers and infants.
This decision to support the aid post came about as a result of the trip by members of the Shoalhaven Bushwalkers to the PNG Highlands in March. Since returning, the group has been working with Umi community leaders on how to get the aid post built, staffed and maintained, and training in place for village birth attendants.
Thanks to a Mt Hagen community-based organisation, Vision for Homes, and two Australian based NGOs the Shoalhaven Bushwalkers are nearing their goal. The next step is to raise funds to provide the equipment required for the aid post and to contribute to the travel costs of a volunteer nurse/midwife from Australia to Mt Hagen.
