These DC3's, wrapped in fabric, were on their way to Dutch New Guinea during the early days of the Indonesian/Dutch conflict - don't know whu they just didn't fly them in.

A sing-sing in Rabaul with dancers being beaten on upraised arms by long tough canes seemingly without any pain inflicted. Could well have been some form of drug involved in this ritual.

A Tolia sing-sing near Rabaul - a very serious affair with lots of activity and complicated routines not typical of other mainland areas of PNG.

The Catalina flying boat was the weekly "in" and "out" to kerema and kikori. At Kikori the crew had to fend off logs coming downstream whilst at the mooring.

Arehava Primary School, Gulf District. In the school garden - wild pigs caused a lot of damage, hence the shotgun.

Arehava Primary School, Gulf District. The only croc (huala) I shot - caused problems with a local teacher who wrote to the District Inspector (Neville Dachs) that I was "doing crocodile business and not the school business".

My aluminium Single Officer's Quarters in coastal Arehava Village - it had a wood fired stove and oven just to keep the temperature up high.

Weekend activities at Kikori station - Bob Fullerton (Didiman), Morrie Brown (Kiap), Geoff McBean (CPO).

Arehava Primary School, Gulf District. Frightening to consider these Standard V kids are now in their late 50's and that quite a few of them are no longer with us.

Arehava Primary School, Gulf District. This "Eharo" (mask/headdress) was commissioned by me and made by one of the last mask makers of the Orokolo 7 year dance cycle long before stopped by Missionaries.

Kerema 1963. Fishing nets were dipped into the waves to get small shellfish - the nets were woven from cord from vehicle tyres.

At Popondetta 1974. My kids (Martin and Helen) in a 1942 Jeep built from bits and pieces scavenged from airstrips around Popondetta.

This and the next two photos are around Port Moresby in 1937 - a friend gave them to me. This one depicts two Australian sailors en route to the Spithead Review. These three images were scanned from glass plate negatives taken by Naval Photographer Saxon Fogarty of Fremantle - the Australian flotilla was on route to Britain for the Spithead Review.
