Most of my time in PNG was spent with the Administration. I worked as the Handcrafts Marketing Officer within Business Development (whose Secretary was Pauliu’s Matane) which became the Department of Commerce on Independence. The task involved encouraging the development of ‘handcrafts’ rather than the more commonly referred to ‘artefacts’ but of course there was cross over between the two. It was a fascinating time and hopefully our work had some benefits for those people whose skills make what are some of most original and characteristics crafts in the world.
