Notes from the Northern Territory
The PNG-Australia Social and Cultural Group in Darwin can be described as inactive. Nothing new there, I suggest. Forty years ago the German Club and the Italian Club in Alice Springs were flourishing. Both have vanished as the migrants with their enthusiastic volunteers fade out of the picture and succeeding generations find plenty to interest them outside their history. Happily PNGAA hasn’t disappeared and while we maintain our quarterly link across the continent it won’t soon. On a brighter note we can hope that Darwin’s Social and Cultural Group can reactivate once more to turn on a 40th, if final, Independence celebration next September.
